This is a recording of my first (intentional) drone.
Or is it? I mean is it a drone? When is a piece of recorded sound a drone?
Are there rules or/and standards so you might say: This is a drone and that isn't?

Not sure if I would call it a drone, but I do like the sound of it Very Happy
Almost sounds like you have something mechanical going on.

That was one of my questions: When is a piece of music 'a drone' or why wouldn't you call this a drone?

I don't think there are any real rules for it or a clear definition that everybody would agree on so I can only speak for myself.
For me personally drones are mostly about long sustained notes that slowly change over time. At least that's the basic gist
of it. For over a year I have been playing music from project "droning" by Louigi Verona every friday on the radio stream
and not all of his drones actually contain long sustained notes. Some of those I personally wouldn't call drones but there
are others that I would still consider to be "droney" which I think has to do with a certain repetition.

I think if you would slow the sequencer way down in your patch and add some long delays to it so the steps merge into
eachother it could actually make a very nice drone.

Anyway here are some drones I made which might give you an idea of what I consider to be a drone:
SunDrone
Ominous Drones
OHM
osQ
SawDrone
3D roning
Prayer Drone

Oh nice!

I'd call it a noodle ... a noodle being a self playing patch.

Make 'm longer!

The advantage being .. a noodle has no rules .. as long as the synth does it all.

Edit: the disadvantage being .. when you record a noodle .. its never as nice as when you just listened .. for some odd reason ...

I am somewhat familiar with your work, pHobos, but I thougt it was your stile of creating drones.
My thought was that a drone was a patch that uses little or no input from the performer and evolve more or less constant over time.
But thanks for clearing that out!
Come to think of it: it is analogous with playing the didgerido where you play a more or less constant tone using circular breathing. This is called the drone too Wink
edit: Ah, Jan, thanks, a noodle... Rolling Eyes

Does the act of recording change something at a quantum level, perhaps?

BTW Grumble I liked your piece. Sounds like a living machine.

Nice track :-)

Could you, on a next occasion, post it as an mp3? or when worried about lost bits maybe as a flac file.

heh .. even on that supposedly 50 Mbit link at work it was slow .. but I guess it was actually the server bandwidth being the bottleneck.

btw .. downloaded wavosaur the other day .. it is not open source, but donation ware .. I seem to like that one better than Audacity .. but I still prefer CoolEdit over everything else I've seen .. even when that one is getting a lil old and grumpy.
