WALDORF SOFTWARE --------------------------------------------------------------- 1. GENERAL (Copied from Midi Bay Manual) WARRANTY Waldorf Electronics warrants for M4U for a period of 6 months. This applies solely to flaws in material. Any claims can be made within this period only. Damages, consequential damages and costs directly or indirectly resulting from use of this product or product failure are not covered by the warranty. SCOPE OF SUPPPLY Please check the contents of this package for completeness and perfect condition. - M4U - 9 V DC Power Supply - Owner's Manual (what you are reading) TECHNICAL REMARKS Only high-grade and tested components have been used for the construction of M4U. When putting the unit into operation the general guidelines for operating electrical devices must always be observed. In order to avoid lengthy and expensive repairs you should give M4U the same care and attention you give the remaining components of your MIDI system. In particular you should ensure that ... - M4U is never exposed to strong vibrations, dust or extreme humidity. - the correct voltage (9 V DC) is supplied and nothing but the power plug, MIDI cables and if neccessary a SUB D 25 (male) cable is attached to M4U. --------------------------------------------------------------- 2. HOW TO USE M4U is an interface, that enables you to read and write MIDI with your RS 232 port. CONNECTING THE UNIT First connect M4U's RS 232 port (SUB D 25, female) to your computer. If your computer has the appropiate plug, you can simply connect M4U without using any cables for that port. Should your computer have a 9 pin serial port, you will need an adapter or an appropriate cable. Then connect the MIDI IN and MIDI OUT jack to the MIDI OUT and MIDI IN (respectively) of your musical equipment. Plug in the 9 V DC power supply. The MIDI IN and MIDI OUT LEDs should blink and the ON LED will stay lit. Now you are ready to go. HOW IT WORKS M4U should now be able to receive MIDI information from your musical instrument. The information is then passed to your host computer via the RS 232 port. The serial port of your computer must be configured as follows: - 38400 Baud - 8 Bit - 1 Stop Bit - No Parity - RTS/CTS (Technical remark: A 1024 byte buffer compensates for delays that might occur if your host computer is busy and sets the RTS-signal to low. In the other direction a 512 byte buffer reduces communication between your host computer and M4U). The reverse direction works in analogy. A MIDI application sends MIDI bytes to the serial port, where they are received by M4U and sent out to the MIDI OUT jack with a lower baud rate (MIDI uses 31250 baud). --------------------------------------------------------------- 3. WALDORF SOFTWARE UNIX There is a Midi Monitor that runs under X11 available in our archive (distributed with the Gnu Public Licence) called xmm. This can be obtained using our mail server: # mailx arcserv@waldorf-gmbh.de # Subject: (not used) # HELP or # LOCATE xmm or # SEND ./waldorf/xmm/README # SEND ./waldorf/xmm/1.0.tar.z MS WINDOWS Currently we are working on a MultiMedia Driver that will enable your MIDI Applications to use M4U. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Waldorf Electronics GmbH Neustr. 9 - 12 53498 Waldorf, Germany
